Second Display shows the screen of one Mac on another. Your screen stays on your own cable or network. To run the free trial and your licence we keep a little information about your account, and nothing more.
Your screen
The picture goes directly from the Mac you work on to the Mac you use as a display, over the Thunderbolt cable or your local network. It never passes through our servers and we never see it.
The picture is not encrypted. On a cable, only your two Macs are connected. In Network mode, someone with access to the same network and the right tools could see it. Use Network mode only on networks you trust, such as your home, and use the cable on shared or public networks.
Second Display has no pairing. Any Mac running Second Display on the same cable or network can find your display Mac and show its screen there.
How your screen travels, in Support
Your account
Only the Mac you work on has an account. The Mac you use as a display needs none. When you sign in, we keep:
- your email address and a random account number;
- when your account was created and when your free trial ends;
- whether you have bought Second Display, and when;
- for each Mac you sign in on: its name, the versions of Second Display and macOS, and when it was signed in and last used;
- a keyed hash of a hardware identifier of each Mac you sign in on. The identifier itself never leaves your Mac. The hash ties the free trial to the Mac, so a new account on the same Mac continues the trial that was already used there;
- if you sign in with Apple or Google: a hash of the identifier they give us, so you can sign in the same way again. If they send your name, we pass it to the app and don’t store it.
Sign-in codes are sent by our email provider, stored only as hashes and expire after 10 minutes. We use your email only to sign you in and to write to you about your account or your purchase. We send no marketing email.
Purchases
Payments are handled by RevenueCat and Stripe. When you buy, RevenueCat receives your account number and email address, and Stripe receives your payment details. We never see your card. RevenueCat sends your receipt. Their own privacy policies apply: RevenueCat and Stripe.
Product analytics
The app records product events, such as “setup finished”, “a display connected” or “the speed test recommended High”, so we can learn which features work and which need fixing. These events never contain your email, names of your Macs or of people, network addresses, or anything shown on your screen. They are processed by Google Analytics for Firebase. There are no ads, and we don’t sell or share your data for advertising.
Updates
Second Display checks this website for updates. Like any download, the request shows your IP address and the version of the app to our hosting provider.
This website
This website uses Google Analytics, a service of Google, only if you allow it. Until you choose Allow, no Google script loads, no cookie is set and nothing is sent to Google. We ask on your first visit, and you can change your choice at any time in Analytics settings, at the bottom of every page. If you turn it off, we delete its cookies.
Once you allow it, Google Analytics counts visits, the pages you see and the site you came from, and the steps that show whether a page helps: searches in Support, clicks on Download and Buy, signing in on the account page and a completed purchase. With each visit it receives the type of your browser and device, your screen size and language, and your IP address, which it uses to estimate your country and city and doesn’t store. It sets two cookies whose names start with _ga, so it can recognise this browser and its visits. We never send it your email or your account, and a search that contains an email address or a long number is left out. There are no ads, and ad personalisation and Google signals are off.
We use Google Analytics on the basis of your consent (Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR). Google may process this data in the United States. Your choice is kept on this device for 12 months, then we ask again.
Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs, which include IP addresses. When you sign in on the account page, your browser keeps the sign-in until you sign out or close the tab.
Where your data is kept, and for how long
Our account service, its database and this website run on Google Cloud. The account data is stored in the United States.
- Your account: until you delete it.
- A signed-in Mac: until you sign out on it, or 180 days after it was last used.
- Request logs, which include IP addresses: 30 days.
- Google Analytics cookies on your device: at most 13 months. What Google Analytics links to them: at most 14 months; after that only totals remain in its reports.
- After you delete your account we keep a keyed hash of your email address and of the hardware identifiers of your Macs, with the dates of your trial, so the same email or Mac doesn’t get another free trial. These hashes can’t be turned back into your email or your Mac.
- Payment records stay with Stripe and in our accounts for as long as tax law requires.
On your Mac
Second Display keeps its logs on your Mac. They reach us only if you export diagnostics and send them to us yourself. Diagnostics never include your screen or your sign-in.
Your choices and rights
- See your licence, sign out or delete your account on the account page.
- Allow Google Analytics on this website or turn it off in Analytics settings. Turning it off doesn’t affect what was collected before.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, a correction or its deletion by writing to privacy@seconddisplay.app.
- Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your data, and to complain to your data protection authority.
Second Display is not meant for children under 13.
Changes
When this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top.
